Viv’s Story

“I’ve had such a great experience with them that I’ve been volunteering there ever since…”
I was married for 22 years, but once I had my kids, the relationship became more and more abusive and I had to leave. My kids were about 8 and 10 years old when I ended up on the streets. Interestingly, it was on the streets that I stopped drinking, rather than the other way around. I had to keep a clear head as I was a woman, alone on the streets for long time and I didn´t know who I was going to meet. I used to knit for people on the street and after a passer-by noticed the toys scattered around me, she asked for one. I ended up knitting orders for people for 8 years.
After living rough, alone, for about a year, I met my partner. It was really after meeting him that things started to change. He had applied for house through the council, so that got us out. I did continue to knit though, and probably did it for 8 years in total. I did it even while I was selling the Big Issue. I came into contact with Pathway when I was working there, and I was lucky enough to get onto the dental programme. I’ve had such a great experience with them that I’ve been volunteering there ever since.
“I was inspired by Viv’s time spent knitting whilst living on the streets of London.” Carla
