Julian’s Story

“I told my partner about 5 years before that I would look after him, my biggest reason for getting a place to live…”
My mother passed away and I could not save her. I had to tell a lot of people in my family, including my brother, who thought it was my fault. I listened to my older brother and sister and signed my part of the house over to my brother. At first he provided for me, but it didn’t work. He sold the house and told me just 12 hours before.
At the time when I was sleeping rough I went to a soup kitchen based in Victoria. We talked about my life – mainly things relating to rough sleeping and substance misuse, because the organisation helped homeless and substance misuse people into flats. The other thing you needed was to be over 35. So I moved into my flat. I needed to do this because I told my partner about 5 years before that I would look after him, my biggest reason for getting a place to live.
“I interpreted his story as him being a caterpillar transforming into a beautiful butterfly.” Sia
